Career Plan with Detours

Daily writing prompt
What is your career plan?

We all start out in high school by trying to figure out what we want to be when we grow up. That’s the money question…college, major, job plan, “where do you see yourself in ten years”… Sometimes I still don’t know how to answer that question.

It all started out as a dream to be an author. Not just any author, a bestselling author. I wrote stories, came up with scenarios in my head, my imagination ran wild. Then I took a left turn.

By my junior year of high school, I decided to go after the idea of opening a childcare center. I had been working in one for a few years and loved it, so why not? I came up with a plan to attend the local technical college and go after that dream. Then came a roundabout…

I took another direction and looked into degrees for pediatric nursing. This one never went any further than research, but it was one that held my interest for a while. The fact that blood makes me queasy was the dealbreaker.

I took the third right off the roundabout and went towards teaching. At this point though, there was quite a bit going on for me mentally and emotionally. I was still young and living at home, but I couldn’t wrap my head around leaving and putting myself out into the world. So, I went back to the idea of the childcare center. Technical college was it for me.

Four years of tech school (because I kept adding extra classes) and I had my Associate’s degree. I was now able to operate a childcare center! BUT I didn’t. I worked at a few as an assistant director and teacher but didn’t go after that dream of owning my own. The regulations and cost were very daunting. So, I decided to go back to school for my Bachelor’s.

Online college for the win! I received my degree and have been teaching for a few years now at my current school. I love it and couldn’t ask for a better institution to be employed by. While doing so, I have self-published two romance novels via Kindle. Check and check!

But I’m not done yet. Back on the path and taking a left turn now. I am working on freelancing and being a virtual assistant. I am still working at the school, but I am also working from home as a proofreader and copywriter. I dabble in other areas also. I am up for learning any platform or skill. The nature of a teacher is to keep learning new things. I’m holding true to that!

We had College Decision Day for the Seniors, and every class was invited to attend. They all have different career paths and will most likely divert from their original plan. But you know what? It’s okay. Who at the age of 17 or 18 knew exactly where they would be in ten years? If you did, I proud of you! If not, I’m still proud of you. Do what is right for you. Explore. Decide. Change your mind!
